This movie was one of the best films ever produced by John Woo. this was his last Hong Kong movie before his transition to Hollywood. It recieved a lot of positive reviews but Vincent Canby of The New York Times said that he found it difficult to follow both the action scenes and the subtitles at the same time, but also agreed that "Mr. Woo does, in fact, seem to be a very brisk, talented director with a gift for the flashy effect and the bizarre confrontation." A review in the Los Angeles Times stated that "With Hard Boiled, John Woo shows himself to be the best director of contemporary action films anywhere." Empire magzine gave this movie a four out of five and stated that "this movie is better than a dozen Die Hard movies".
